I'm curious to see the answers to this, I have this, what I think, awesome set up and plan for an overarching storyline for my players and I have most of it figured out but am stumped on the BBEG!
Homebrew to fit your setting. To me, what makes them the BBEG is their personality and their plans, and that will and really should change for each campaign. It rarely matches up with a published stat block. Often, I wouldn’t stat them until close to the end, so if I need to change something about them as the story is progressing, it’s easier to do that. PCs shouldn’t be the only ones who get to level up.
Otherwise, when in doubt, Tiamat or vecna, I guess.

I have Tiamat in reserve, I've scattered a few bread crumbs that if they decide to follow will lead them in to my adapted version of Tyranny of Dragons, so she may wind up making an appearance. My current BBEG is Vecna actually, lol. I'm doing a whole Library of Fate thing, with different volumes having been stolen and each volume that they find acts as a kind of transport to another one of the DND planes like Eberron for them to have some adventures in and find their way home, and the ultimate BBEG is Vecna who is trying to get in to the library because it is where the Book of VIle Darkness has been locked away.
i wonder what the difference between 'preferred' and 'popular' would be. surely most campaigns don't get up to the level of a fight with the god of dragons, but plenty have run afoul of a giant, beholder, or dragon dragon that happens to be boss of whatever else had been going on. and where can we find the numbers of bad kings who hired magic guys vs bad magic guys who enthralled kings?
looking forward to a wonk popping by with factoids about BBEG numbers from official 5E adventures at the very least. fingers crossed for data!

unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
tell them you don't like features disappeared quietly in the night: providefeedback!

That's a good point. Most people don't actually fight Tiamat, they just look at her start block, and wonder if they could win a fight against her.

What monsters do you all think is a prime BBeg, or perhaps a monster that is underrated and should be considered as a potential bbeg?
