Not sure if he's gonna read this or not, but I gotta give credit to the DM of my friends' and I's DnD campaign last night for perfectly demonstrating the power of Alfred Hitchcock-ian suspense in a roleplaying game. I'm not sure if this was a part of a pre-made module he was running or if he made it up on the spot, but he showed me a cool GM trick I need to write down in a notebook or something to remember.
So here's what happened: the party was exploring a mysterious mansion we were trapped in. In the basement we found a hidden laboratory, and on the shelves were tons of dead creatures floating in liquids in jars. Probably used for lab experiments and such. One such jar was empty with the lid off, which one of our party members deduced, must mean whatever was in the jar must have escaped and was somewhere in the mansion. The same party member decided to examine the jar, and after rolling investigation our DM told us,
"At the bottom of the jar is a faded label. It reads 'mimic'."
And now, we are all paranoid of a mimic appearing in the next session, but we don't know where. Idk if this was some common trick I just never heard of before, but I am now impressed by the ability to foreshadow and create a feeling of "ooooo, when's the mimic gonna show up?"
This sounds like it's from The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces from Candlekeep Mysteries. Not that that diminishes the DM's skill at delivery. Definitely don't look at that adventure to spoil anything haha
