I hired a DM for me, my wife, and my 2 sons (9 & 11) from StartPlaying. After a session 0 and 1 game session of Mines of P, she cancelled 1 week saying her kid was sick and then the next week as we're logging on for the session said she wants to spend more time starting today, Bye. So I took over as DM with my character as an NPC. Now my wife is kinda flaking out about it so I'm going to run a campaign just for my 2 boys, but I won't run an NPC because they look to my NPC as the leader now. Easy to fall into with kids & their Mom won't take the lead, so I'm going to run a campaign just with them on the team. I may give one a familiar that can heal so they don't get into TPKs...
I think it is fine for new players when I started playing dnd with my friend he was the only player and he played 2 characters and I played 2 DM PCs. It is not as hard as it sounds in my experience.
