so a friend of mine is running a backrooms oneshot and has given us the freedom to choose our own magic items. (fyi im playing a lvl20 half-elf oath of devotion paladin) we get
3 uncommon magic items
2 rare items
1 very rare item
and i need YOUR help finding the best ones to survive and maybe kill a starfish monster
the reson i ask the DMs for a player question is that ya'll know more about magic items and there's no player thred as far as i can tell
edit. i used my very rare, one rare slot, and one common slot for the sword of paruns, amulet of health, and adamantine plate
About Me: Godless monster in human form bent on extending their natural life to unnatural extremes /general of the goose horde /Moderator of Vinstreb School for the Gifted /holder of the evil storyteller badge of no honor /king of madness /The FBI/ The Archmage of I CAST...!
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Fun Fact: i gain more power the more you post on my forum threads. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
So I personally like a sword and board pally rather than a going for a 2h weapon. YMMV. I’d get a Sword of the Paruns(an extra attack every round? Yes please), a belt of hill giant strength (so you can put your ASI’s into other stats and/or feats instead of investing in strength—take advantage of bypassing the pain of playing through less than ideal stats), adamantine plate (can’t crit me, I’m the paladin man!) and a +1 if not +2 shield for sure. This leaves you with one attunement slot.
Here’s a paladin of mine for a game with a very generous DM https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/60484166/KnYrKB You won’t be able to get all the gear he has but you can see the other options I’d recommend to round out what you can have in addition the items I already mentioned
For Very rare: Bronze Horn of Valhalla can absolutely wreak action economy, and gives you some disposable meat shields/potential damage. Rod of Absorption is quite potent, as its ability usage is limited over the items lifetime, so in a one shot you can spam it without regret. though it might not be useful if the starfish monster isn't a spellcaster. Wakened Dragon’s Wrath Weapon is the best damaging weapon you could get, as it is at most rarities. (this is balanced out because the weapon downgrades regularly unless you do specific stuff to upkeep it, but this doesn't matter in a one shot.)
For Rare:+2 shield is a good boost to AC, beating out +1 armor of the same rarity. As mentioned above, Cube of Force is amazing, and doesn't require attunement. +2 spellcasting foci (there are various options) aren't fancy, but still potent. Lastly, Stirring Dragon’s Wrath Weapon is still the best magic weapon you can get.
For Uncommon: Broom of Flying. No attunement, 50 foot fly. winged boots are similar, but mostly worse. If you don't choose a higher rarity one, you should definitely get a magic weapon, just to overcome magic resistance. There are some other good ones, but that's what comes to mind.
Also, shoutout to the Mizzium apparatus: it's a fun item, but I would recommend doing a build dedicated to it for the best results. Very chaotic, good for a 1-shot.

This is the correct answer, I give this a +1 vote on EVERYTHING.

Why? The Sword of Paruns is only +1 and uses other people's reactions. The Belt is also very rare and the OP can only have 1 very rare. Mizzium Armor does the same thing as admantine armor AND when you make a STR or CON save instead of taking half damage, you take 0 damage.

I have never heard of Mizzium Armor! What book is that from? It’s a belt of Hill Giant Strength FYI, so it’s not Very Rare if memory serves correctly, if it was like a Storm Giant Belt then it’s a higher rarity no? As for the Paruns Sword, reactions are honestly really underused and as a Paladin more smites are just better.

You are one creature within 60’ of you. What else are you doing with your reaction besides maybe an AoO? The sword guarantees an extra attack instead of only the chance for one based on your opponent’s choices. The Dragon Wrath weapon is pretty sick though. I don’t have access to the book it’s in otherwise I’d go with that.
The belt is rare.
There are better rare items than the Mizzium armour IMHO. Adamantine does the important part by negating crits and leaves more options for gear selection. I’d rather have a +2 shield than a rider that won’t see much use attached to my str and con saves, or a ring of protection or cloak of displacement paired with a +1 shield.

If the belt is just Hill Giant strength then it is even more of a waste. 21 STR is the same as 20 STR which you can probably get by lvl 4. a Cloak of Displacement give any creature disadvantage to attack you. If you get hit, it comes back at the start of your next turn.
Paruns Sword, +1 weapon, allow somebody else to use their reaction to make an attack, dash, or dodge. It doesn't help you at all. How does it help Smites?
Steel, +2 weapon, in-combat Revivify, recharges at dawn.
Dragons' Wrath Weapon, +2 weapon, +2d6 additional damage, 30 foot cone DC 16 8d6 breath attack once per day.
Admittedly, the Shears should be used by a Rogue but giving the entire party crits on nat 19 or nat 20 is a big boost.

YOU are a creature within 60’ of you. Immediately after you use the Attack action to attack with the sword, you can enable one creature within 60 feet of you (yourself) to use its (your) reaction to make one weapon attack.

Rather than the amulet of health for a 19 con, consider swapping the stats and ASI’s you used for your strength with con and use the belt of hill giant strength for 21 str at essentially the same cost. Unless there is some specific reason, like feats you’ve chosen only boosting strength or something like that, you’re better off using a rare item to net you a 21 than a 19. Hope that makes sense.

OK technically true.

Cube of Force (Rare) can save you from a LOT of things. I would get it.
You probably want an armor and a weapon as attuned magic items. Consider for your armor antimagic armor (Very Rare). Amazing how useful that is.

I would choose
Very Rare - Dragon's Wrath Weapon, Fate Cutter Shears, or Steel.
Rare - Mizzium Armor is very practical.
Rare - Cloak of Displacement
Uncommon - Broom of Flying is excellent for movement.
