Heyho, my players just did the Cult of Levistus quest. I want to bring some devilry into this game, so I planned to have Levistus contact them. But because of story-reasons Asmodeus would be much better. He will offer them a contract to help them against Xhardorok, becaus he likes that they took care of the Cult.
But why would Asmodeus „help“ the characters against Sunblight? I thought that maybe Xhardorok is one of Levistus minions too. But what would Levistus gain from this? Why would Levistus want to destroy Ten-Towns? And what could Asmodeus get out of this? Because the players won’t sign away their souls right away, so a smaller contract could be good
Xardorok is all but working for Asmodeus as written. To my mind the ideal chance to insert devilry would be after Xardorok's defeat or by means of the disguised bearded devil who's attempting to manipulate Xardorok. Maybe Asmodeus is upset that the characters have removed one of his pawns.
Asmodeus could seek a Baatorian lore or magic item trapped in the lost Necropolis of Ythryn and could make a contract with the party to help dealing with their enemies in exchange for finding an access to the Netheril enclave.
My immediate thought is that the Chaldaryn dragon is a manufactured threat meant to get hero's to pledge themselves to devils for the power to defeat it. Asmodeus has already corrupted the duegar enough to claim their souls and now aims to use them to corrupt others in the region. He likely doesn't care which devil any would be heroes pledge themselves to because they all ultimately serve him but likely wants to claim as powerful souls as possible.
Personally I would have an agent of Zariel come to offer a deal to defeat the dragon. They are ultimately one of the most straight forward and sympathetic devils. She wants warriors for the front line and will offer power to those with potential to be strong fighter to join her. Being a former angel I also think it makes sense for her servants to have some psuedo angelic appearance which may also entice players. A grizzled warrior cloaked in fire.
It lets Asmodeus remain where he is best. Hidden in the background pulling strings.

That’s a great idea, thanks! Asmodeus fabricating threats he then helps to resolve is deliciously evil. And Zariel could be a really good addition

You should read the Sunblight section carefully.

The good news is that the opportunity is there.
