Naturally, I can do what I like with them, but I'm wondering about the original intent.
This is how I understand it:
3 elderly hunters are spiritually led to Omu:
-Bag of Nails is a CR 8 senile assassin that wants to go out fighting, but also would like to find a specific magic item to track down his missing son. Good stuff there.
-Hooded Lantern is a CR 1 hunter that wants to take down a magical T-Rex. Ballsy. Gruesome. But ok!
And Copper Bell...has a shawl?
It seems like I'm missing something about HL and CB.
I think the first paragraph pretty much covers their general motivations:
"In the twilight of their lives, venerable tabaxi sometimes leave their families and venture into the jungle to claim a hunter's death. A divine being known as the Cat Lord leads the bravest to Omu, where they spend their final days hunting dinosaurs and other jungle beasts."
They are all venerable Tabaxi hunters fighting to stay alive until they don't. Copper Bell is probably tossed in as a possibly friendly option who is familiar with the layout of Omu, waiting for the final battle. She'd actually likely be quite happy joining the party and dying in one of their fights - which is probably how I would play it if the party met her. Grizzled, empathetic, matron type hunter, sees the poor party out of their depth in Omu among its many dangers and offers her assistance. Party starts to like her and she dies in a fight saving the party. The kind of glorious death the Cat Lord might look for ...
The assassin is a clear threat and the other hunter is intending to kill themselves fighting the enhanced T-rex. Hooded Lantern would probably be quite upset if the party helped them win that fight though they might be satisfied to die in a battle to rid Omu of the predator. Dying watching the T-rex fall as they breathed their last. A small smile on the wizened Tabaxi face. :)

In published adventures, sometimes NPC information is left intentionally vague to allow the DM some room to ad-lib some flavor of their own.
