I am just curious about this because when talking about my character with my friend she was like "omg imagine if he fell in love with a Tiefling and they had a child together". So that got me thinking. My friend is playing quite a beautiful, almost human looking Tiefling - she still has horns and a tail but the rest of her features make her look somewhat human, so with makeup and well fitting clothes and something to cover her horns, she can move around the city without really drawing attention.
What would happen if we played our characters like they fall in love with each other and end up having a child together
What would you expect that child to be like. Since my character has Aasimar blood, and my friends character is a Tiefling, that would mean our child would have bother celestial and infernal heritage. Would the two cancel each other out so that the child would just be Human or would they be a hybrid of light and dark? What would you even call a child with both celestial and infernal heritage? In other games I have played, such a child would be a Nephilim but as far as I know, that race doesn't exist in d&d.
How would you expect our families to act?
Also, the average joe tends to be mistrustful and terrified of Tieflings and slightly terrified by and in awe of Aasimar. What would you expect the people in the streets to think of a child with Aasimar and Tiefling heritage?
I guess I am asking both players and DMs how you would fit a Aasimar/Human and Tiefling couple with a mixed race child into your stories and worlds. I am asking because I would really like to work with my friend to make this part of our stories in the game we play, just to see where we could go with this and also; I would like to weave stuff like this into the campaign that I DM for as well because I think it would help flesh out the world setting more.

my understanding is that it would be one or the other, whichever of the two heritages is stronger (genetically) would probably win out and they would either be full one or full the other, or human, since that is a possibility for any race with celestial or fiendish blood (two tiefling parents having a full human child for example), i don't see a half aasimar/half tiefling working due to that.
with that being said. It's completely up to the DM how they want to run such things, if they decide it would work, then, there you go, it would work. :D
Very Interesting question by the way.
As for what you would call a child with both celestial and fiendish blood... an ABOMINATION!!!!, no really, if they did exhibit signs of both it would probably either be looked at as either something completely horrible, or something entirely very special

Like a "chosen one" perhaps. Our DM has hinted at some greater "chosen one" prophecy. If that could be our child that would be awesome because then the whole thing becomes, we are out here not just for the adventure but to get our child somewhere safe, where they can grow up and be trained to fight such and such.
Then you have that play of "we really need to get our child to this safe place now" but that place is far away and "we need food and supplies along the way" so in between trying to protect this chosen one, we have to go off and do adventures to make ends meat.
Have no idea of our DM would buy into that as no doubt he has already planned out his story arc. Still though, I think it would be awesome and not the typical d&d game that people usually play.
I would expect them to be able to have a child together. The specific race of the child (human, aasimar, tiefling, or something new) would be completely up to the DM, perhaps even surprising you and the other player with what the result could be.
With regards to what the reaction from the common folk or the characters family would be, that I would imagine would vary extensively based on the campaign setting, and the relationship the characters have with their parents. In a particularly high-fantasy campaign setting there may not be a particularly extreme reaction. If the characters and their families are in good standing with each other, positive relationships that understand and trust the choices they make, they might be incredibly happy and excited regarding the union and potential children. However, in other campaign settings, especially low magic settings or those that are particularly xenophobic, such a union and child might result in being thrown out of town or hiring individuals to try and kill the characters.
I think it sounds like a wonderful opportunity for some interesting dynamic between the two characters, and can lead to some very memorable stories and adventures to come.
Ooh, what an interesting concept! I agree with a previous post that, as far as the official races go, the child would be one of three things: human, tiefling, or aasimar. Sort of like how a half-elf parent doesn't make quarter-elf babies. That said, this is a great opportunity for you and your DM to come up with something completely new and interesting. Maybe the child looks completely human but has taken on racial traits from both parents. Maybe the child has the appearance of both. Just think about what makes sense and then the DM sort of runs what would work best with the story. The great thing about D&D is that anything can be possible!
Are you being serious or is this just being fun because I have honestly never heard this before and dont recall ever reading it either. If you are being serious, I don't know how I could have missed something like this as its a pretty major part of the d&d world - the basis of an entire race.

I would normally say the child should take after one parent. The exception being either orcs or elves coupled with humans. The possibility of a human child is super intriguing. I will say that a human child kinda takes away from the sort of "forbidden" pairing of a tiefling - aassimar union. so i offer this... dm rolls d4... in secret... 1 tiefling 2 aasimar 3 human 4.... maphisto or some other extra planer being is using the birth/soul of this child to enter the material plane and... bring ruin...open a chicken restaurant whatever. Enjoy
Roll a d4/Flip a coin heads/evens is aasimar tails/odds is tiefling, or you could homebrew a race with an even combo of both, or choose one of the two and homebrew a fitting sorcerer subclass of the other or you could make it a human or choose one for the statblock, and then mix in other things. the kid could be a tiefling that has human skin color instead of red, and give them horns that form a ring/halo to signify the bond of light and dark, whilst also keeping the tail.
Edit: I didn't realize this was from 2018, I'm very sorry about the necromancy
The easiest way to run it, is to pick one race for mechanics and then come up with an aesthetic combination. You can even make use of sub races or class to flavour it. Maybe they are a fallen Aasimar to reflect the demonic influence or a Zariel tiefling to represent the angelic influence. Maybe they are also a divine sorcerer or fiend warlock.
In terms of how they are treated that will likely depend on aesthetics. If the tielfing elements are subtle then they may be treated as an aasimar or human and visa versa.
There really is no rule on the outcome. You could argue that the celesital elements become corrupted by the fiendish an they appear like an a Erinyes, maybe their appearance varies depending how they act and they appear more or less celestial or demonic over time . Maybe it's literally half an half with half the body appearing devilish and half appearing angelic .
