apologies in advance long post coming Hello I am DMing my first campaign it is a home brew in which my PC are tasked with finding an ancient artifact for a traveling merchant. Threw investigation the part determines that the artifact is the heart of an ancient beast that once terrorized the lands they party eventually finds it and the merchant turns out to be a leader of a cult that worshiped the beast and they needed the heart to redirect the beast. The party then is unlisted by the king of the land to find the leaders of this cult and rescue a general of his that they have taken captive. Eventually the party finds where the general is which the help of a shady pirate. As they begin to fight the final battle it is reviled that the cult leader is in fact a dragon who is trying to resurrect his dragon king the party was able to convince the dragon to leave with the artifact as they agreed as a group that they where to week for the battle by rolling a nat 20 on a persuasion check. To keep them interested in the story from here when they got back to the castle I had them find that it was attacked by a group of dragons who killed the king and his court and left a bloody message of “you once took what was ours. We will now take it all back” at this point I’m lost as what to do any ideas would be great.
Hello I am DMing my first campaign it is a homebrew in which my PCs are tasked with finding an ancient artifact for a traveling merchant.
Through investigation the party determines that the artifact is the heart of an ancient beast that once terrorized the lands.
The party eventually finds it and the merchant turns out to be a leader of a cult that worshiped the beast and they needed the heart to resurrect the beast.
The party then is enlisted by the king of the land to find the leaders of this cult and rescue a general of his that they have taken captive.
Eventually the party finds where the general is with the help of a shady pirate.
As they begin to fight the final battle it is reviled that the cult leader is in fact a dragon who is trying to resurrect his dragon king.
The party was able to convince the dragon to leave with the artifact as they agreed as a group that they were to weak for the battle by rolling a nat 20 on a persuasion check.
To keep them interested in the story from here when they got back to the castle I had them find that it was attacked by a group of dragons who killed the king and his court and left a bloody message of “you once took what was ours. We will now take it all back” at this point I’m lost as what to do any ideas would be great.
Well, it sounds like your party wants to get more powerful before fighting the dragon(s), so you should allow them to research the location of some powerful magic items or a powerful enchanter / smith who can make them powerful weapons and armour specifically for fighting dragons.
Having the players navigate some of the intrigues left by the power vacuum of the death of the court may be a nice way to buy yourself time to plan the next step with the dragon plot.
Introduce a new, faction or factions who are trying to seize power for their own ends be they noble or not. Perhaps have them implicate your players as the cause of the catastrophe and turn the populace against them. Perhaps a civil war is now brewing and the players must find a way to stop it. Let them have a hand in how this kingdom is going to turn out. It immerses the players and gives consequences to their actions.
The death of a royal is a great setup for some side adventures while your main baddies regroup and fortify.
