I was tempted to pre-order the monster manual, but there has been enough information released where I am going to do what I did with the PHB and DMG, go to the hobby shop, look at the index, look at the content and then decide if its worth a buy. If anyone did do a pre-order without buying, why did you? If anyone is doing what I'm doing waiting to read the book's index and to see if the changes are not playable, why are you going that way?
Basically, if it is something I'm probably going to end up getting anyway, I will pre-order. Otherwise, I can wait. I tend to get my physical copy anyway.

I have a collection of DND books, so my philosophy is "What's another one?" So I go either way

Best quote from a book ever: "If you love with your eyes, death is forever. If you love with your heart, there is no such thing as parting."- Jonah Cook, Ascendant, Songs of Chaos by Michael R. Miller. Highly recommend
One reason I like to pre-order things I know I'm going to get anyway is that if I go ahead and pay for it up front I don't have to worry that some disaster is going to strike that'll prevent me from being able to buy it when it comes out. I've already bought it. I'm just waiting for it to arrive. If my car's engine decides to drop out or my hot water heater springs a leak or I get laid off from work, or any other of a thousand different disasters strikes me, at least I know I'm going to get that book.
I pre-order, mostly because I've been collecting the books since 1st edition. I still order the books even though I mostly use the DNDB digital versions now. I still like to have the physical books to read through.
WotC and Hasbro aren't silly enough to print too few print books to sell. And Digital copies are infinite. So, there's no risk of not being able to get my hands on a copy. As a result no point in pre-ordering.
I preorder because as others have said if I’m 95% certain I’m going to buy something (like the new rule books, no way I wasn’t getting those) I might as well put down the cash when I’ve got it. Plus I like D&D Beyond giving me free dice for doing so

I pre-ordered the MM only because I wanted access to the stat blocks in Beyond on the 4th but generally I wait a bit.
I preorder things that I know I will be getting.. so core rule books. but adventures and modules, I wait till they are in stores
You're on WotC's own forums here, so people will probably be biased. I'd go elsewhere for buying advice.
I run games in person and on Maps so I want the convenience of digital and the guarantee of physical. I use both every session.
