So, I used parts of the 4th edition adventure, Keep on the Shadowfell, for my campaign. It went pretty well. The players loved Kalarel as a villain and I threw in a lot of mystery to keep them guessing on what was actually going on.
In the end, they had a couple of NPCs enter his tower with them. They defeated Kalarel, but one of the NPCs fell in the process. For flavor, I added that the Thing in the Portal grabbed Kalarel and the NPC and dragged them into the shadowfell before the portal closed.
The surviving NPC is heartbroken at losing his oldest friend and begins searching for a way to get him back. My PCs surprisingly took an interest in his plight. So, I want to come up with a quest or something to go retrieve their lost ally from the shadowfell. But, I want to build it around the Thing in the Portal as the BBEG.
My question for you all is what is the Thing in the Portal? I don't think there is a 'correct' answer. I'm just looking for ideas. I ran it only as a few black tentacles whipping out of the portal, so there's room for creativity.
The players are currently 6th level. But they will likely be closer to 10 when they confront it.
Pretty simple, but I like it. Use the tail attack for the tentacles. I could do some sort of acid slinging or something for the breath weapon. Any thoughts on a name for this creature?
Kraken. I created a young kraken in homebrew creatures for my group that was being controlled by an evil druid because they were in no way ready to face a full fledged Kraken. They figured out who was controlling it and took him out (all the while getting beat on by the Kraken), freeing the baby Kraken and letting it go, rather than fighting it, which was awesome.
Below is the link to a homebrew monster that I found online and I've used in two of my campaigns since I found it. Both times, its worked pretty well. Just scale this thing up to whatever CR you want the BBEG to be.
As for a young kraken, go with Spur's homebrew or else Kobold Press has their Tome of Beasts (excellent 3rd party resource) with a CR9 Krake Spawn. As luck would have it, I used it just this last weekend as part of a story.
Check out the homebrew subforum and look at the Monster-A-Day thread. In the last couple of pages, he has posted some really great Cthulhu-esque and Mind Flayer-esque monsters.

Thanks for any ideas, folks.
Giant octopus. Reskinned from an ancient black dragon.

Sorry, no. Just getting variations of Ogdru Jhad from Hellboy.

That is clearly a Zerg Hydralisk :)

Mabe a shadow-soaked Elder Brain trapped in the Shadowfell with what is left of its servants and followers.
I do love a little Mind Flayer action :)
