So I have been painting minis for a few years now. With a kid painting at home became rather stressful instead of being a relaxing hobby.so I decided that Iwant to start painting on my lunch breaks while at work. Been looking for art travel cases but none is really making me go splash the cash. Can you guys show me what you guys use for research purposes? TIA
When I was DMing in-person games, I needed a better way to transport all the stuff I needed. A relative owns a video production company, and I got to see some of the bags they used, and fell in love with one. It is very expensive (always buy it on sale). Don't know if it fits your needs, but take a look at "Digital Juice Production Bag" (sometimes called Digital Juice Horizontal Topload Production Bag). It is sturdy, well padded, and has removeable compartments. It's heavy, even empty, but holds a lot. I believe I used to fit 3 or 4 100 miniature cases into the bag + other stuff. Regular price is well over $200 but you can usually find it elsewhere for as low as $90.
At home, I use an Art Bin box that is like a fishing tackle box, but I am using it mostly with tube paints rather than upright bottles.
Honestly if you are working with bottled paints, you might try something even simpler - a pencil case or flat bin with long compartments for brushes, and then a little plastic shoebox for the paints you expect to need. Or even put the brushes inside a long paintbrush plastic bag in the plastic shoebox. See how that works for you before shelling out a bunch of money.
I also love the ArtBin "Super Satchel Double Deep with Lift Out Tray" which have adjustable compartments and then a removable tray on top. I've found that very flexible for all kinds of crafting travel, and it's easy to carry or stack.
In general, ArtBin has a pretty interesting line worth checking out. If you have a local Dick Blick store they may have a selection you can paw through in person. I'd also suggest your Home Depot may have small toolboxes that meet your needs. It's so much nicer to get to put your hands on these and ideally take one of your old and well used paint bottles in with you so you can see what fits.
You can also buy smaller flatter bins that will snap together so that maybe you have three or four that are your entire kit, but you can take just one when you're traveling or working that day.
For whatever reason, these items end up being really ephemeral - they redesign them all the time. I don't know why. But if you find one you like and you think you'd like multiples because they stack well or whatever, buy all that you'll need because 6 months later that exact design may be discontinued.

Playing D&D since 1982
Have played every version of the game since Basic (original Red Box Set), except that abomination sometimes called 4e.
