I have two 2024 Monks in my game and we had a situation come up last week that I'm split on.
I dropped Hypnotic Pattern on them in an attempt to stop them last week during a combat. They both used their Level 10 ability (Self-Restoration) to clear the Charmed condition at the end of their turns.
My question is - how would my fellow DM's rule on this?
Hypnotic Pattern gives the Incapacitated condition and takes away Actions, Bonus Actions, and Reactions. The Monk ability doesn't specify that they need to use an A/BA/R to clear a condition that is afflicting them. If they can clear the Charmed condition, then the Incapacitated condition would also drop.
How would you all rule this?
For reference, they are Warrior of the Open Palm and Warrior of Shadow Monks and the party is Level 14.
Thank you in advance to anyone that reads this and helps me with a decision!
This is legit. Incapacitated isn't "can't do anything" -- you can still move, for instance. None of the restrictions imposed apply to the ability, so it can be used.
I would also say that, even if the spell rendered them unconscious, they can still use the ability to snap out of it, for the same reason. You simply can't disable a monk for long with a charm-based condition.
The Monk has Self-Restoration - Through sheer force of will, you can remove one of the following conditions from yourself at the end of each of your turns: Charmed, Frightened, or Poisoned.
Looking it up - The spell ends for an affected creature if it takes any damage or if someone else uses an action to shake the creature out of its stupor.
Therefore, their special class feature (equivalent of someone else) can end the spell.

What the others have said is correct, in general 3rd level spells are not going to be effective against a 14th level party. With the update to 5.5 most classes/parties have ways to avoid or escape many debilitations in the game, because being debilitated isn't fun and 14th level characters are nearly god-like in ability.

I would rule Monk Self-Restoration removes the Charmed condition from Hypnotic Pattern automatically, ending the Incapacitated condition altogether.
