I have thinking about Ravenloft lately, and the new Dungeon Masters show have pushed me along even further.
I am wondering if it objectively would be worth it to buy "Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft" now, with the new "Ravenloft: Horrors Within" coming in less than 2 months.
Based on what I can find, it seems that a lot of the stuff in VRGtR will be revised in RHW. What are your takes on this?
I have loved the Ravenloft setting, since I bought the setting oiginally back in the early 90s with 2nd edition AD&D, but I've never gotten around to purchasing it for 5e. But, that is going to change.
Since I am not made out of money I do have to think about what I do buy though. So, would VRGtR be worth it, or would I be better off waiting for RHW?
A lot of it will come down to what set of rules do you play most often, if it’s original 5e Van Richten’s might be more useful but if it’s 5.5 then hang on a month and grab Horrors Within.
Having said that if you can afford to preorder Horrors Within has a few extras with it that you might find interesting, especially if you are watching the Dungeon Masters show. There’s a mini adventure called Shadows of Sithicus that comes as a preorder bonus and after each episode of Dungeon Masters we’re getting a one page adventure summary so we can run the same thing they played at home. You don’t get either of those with Van Richtens
Yeah, that's my thoughts as well. I don't mind waiting a month or so to preorder the ultimate bundle (which is what I am definitely going for).
But if there is important stuff in Van Richten's which will not transfer in one form or another, then I might want that as well. If, on the other hand, it will be mostly revised into Horrors Within, then it will basically just be a vast of money.
Besides, I am all-in on 5.5e, with 5e just for filling in the blanks ;)
If you have any uncertainty, I’d say to wait. I wouldn’t even pre-order. Really, that only makes sense if you’re buying in print and you worry they’ll run out —doubly so if you want an alternate cover. But as they’ll never run out of digital products, it’s better to wait on those. See the reviews and make sure it’s not a Spelljammer type of disappointment. And I’m saying that as a person who is generally very happy with WotC products, but some of them are a bit lackluster.
The new Ravenloft gets a whole bunch of stuff if you pay extra during preorder. If you are all in on 5.5, then you probably want to get the new one, as the stuff in Van Richten's might be a little less balanced for 5.5. For example: the warlock subclass in Richten's starts at level one, but subclasses in 5.5 start at third level. That's just a minor thing, but if you're using an online tool it might cause some small issues. I don't have a grasp on the intricacies of balancing a TTRPG so I don't know all that differs, but it is probably just more ideal to grab something that is updated in whatever minor way 5.5 has changed from 5e.

I am definitely going for the ultimate bundle with regards to RHW. I was mostly interested in hearing opinions on whether it would be a waste of money to buy Van Richten's Guide as well. From what I can find of information, it might be.
