I am also confused on what the question is? Does the Nightwalker power liches? Act as a living phylactery? Lorewise, liches are mages who enact blasphemous rituals to store their soul in an object and live forever, while Nightwalkers are released from the Lower Planes whenever an outsider enters them. What exactly do you mean by battery?

He doesn't have much besides the skin on his bones. Me: I'll take the skin on his bones, then.
"You see a gigantic, monstrous praying mantis burst from out of the ground. It sprays a stream of acid from it's mouth at one soldier, dissolving him instantly, then it turns and chomps another soldier in half with it's- "
Indeed. Sorry. I am kind of a new DM and I am trying to make an allegory for a real-world illness for some of the people I work with, using D&D as a therapeutic vehicle... But after reading through the lore (the phylactery ritual basically confirmed my idea is redundant). I might have to rethink my idea... I just wish I could respect the lore at the same time... Sorry for being vague... I suppose I will have to never play this outside of the scope of my intention...
Think of official lore as a guideline. It exists to guide you, not restrain you. If, in your world, Nightwalkers are the necrotic source of energy that sustains liches, then that's what makes you happy and you should use it!
In my world, magic is sustained within Stumps, trees that magic users bind their souls to. As the Stump grows, so to does their power, but if the Stump is destroyed, then the bonded creature dies with it. Throughout the world, the stumps of Stumps exist as a lasting legacy of mages remembered and forgotten.

Yes or No? Is it possible and how? If not, how much bending of the lore would be necessary?
What are you even asking?
