I'm running the end of my Dragon Heist campaign tonight, and (as many people have pointed out, it's not a super well written adventure-- I've had to change a lot) I don't like the whole "the bad guys show up as you're leaving the vault" setup, as it's sudden, undramatic, and doesn't make sense because how did they get in the vault without the keys??
At the moment I have Manshoon's simulacrum and some cronies who've set up a trap for the players outside the Brandath crypt, but just having a fight there still seems kinda weak.
Any suggestions on how to spice it up?
EDIT: I realized my wording was a little off-- I'm not against it being a fight, I just think for a finale, there should be more going on.
Well, add some of the other factions in, and instead of a fight, they have to find a way through the destruction caused by powerful magic without being noticed and/or obliterated. (The Graystaff, Laeral Silverhand, Xanathar, whoever else)

I'd make it more than just a straight fight. Give the party a choice-protect the gold, stop the villain, or save innocent bystanders. Timed objectives or environmental hazards can make the finale feel much more memorable than just reducing enemies to 0 HP
