Hey! Do you guys have any suggestions or ideas for me? I have a session scheduled for tomorrow, but I am really feeling the writer's block and I still want to make sure we have fun. I just need general ideas. My campaign is sort of political based, but it can and does have many fantasy elements. My idea was they essentially have to go to this town so they stay at an inn and the lady is evil and they fight her and stuff. Its really dull. Anything you guys think I could add?
Well, that´s hard to say without more information. Where is the group ? What kind of town ? Who is this lady and what makes her evil ?
The last adventure we played had a cult leader taking the town speaker of a town hostage, took over his castle and told the populace the town speaker was ill and he was just relaying his orders while he was secretly serving the cults interests.
That’s the worst part— I’m not sure.The group is in a sort of like 1200’s country, like if you’ve ever listened to the Oh Hellos, it’s got that vibe. This lady is just an old lady running an inn in a very poor town that frequently has travelers passing through. Maybe she wants to capture travelers for their items. I was also thinking she could be one of those creepy people who’s like “I want friends so let me capture you and keep you locked up forever”. Just brainstorming here, but she could have been born in poverty, and made her way to being comfortable by establishing this inn where the people never leave. Generally something like that.
1200s that's a time when lots of realms are pretty fragmented; we've got feudalism, viking raiders, mongol hordes, gothic architecture, crusades, civil wars... But it sounds like it is early in the campaign where we are dealing with small towns and trekking across the country.
Alright, so the party arrive in this town with an inn and there is some kind of secret / subterfuge going on. Some options:
The town is secretly sacrificing its children to a monster (e.g. hag/witch), if you want it tied to the inn then perhaps the innkeeper is the hag and the food is made from the children.
Hints: as the party arrive they pass some gardens / parks but there are only adults around; they pass by a pregnant woman who looks miserable and no one in the town will make eye-contact with her; the food has a strange flavour to it that they've never tasted before and the innkeeper acts all shifty when questioned about it;
The town is all a lie, and no one is what they seem, instead they are all undead due to some long ago curse, but were abandoned by the necromancer who created them and now are just trying to 'live' normal 'lives'.
Hints: the food at the inn is horrible, and the inn keeper seems confused when they order some as no one in town needs to eat; everyone smells of perfume and if the party get too close they can smell some rancid / rotting smells as well; People stay up really really late and don't seem at all tired in the morning because they don't need to sleep; there might be no pets in town as animals tend to react poorly to undead.
The innkeeper is secretly hiding outlaws or refugees or heretics in their rooms.
Hints: the innkeeper keeps claiming they have no rooms available despite the dining area being empty; there is a complete lack of flags or religious symbols in the inn; perhaps graffiti / theft happens and the innkeeper refuses to call the guards or go to the authorities;
A group of bandits/raiders have taken over the inn and are holding the innkeeper hostage.
There's a rebel/terrorist/organized crime group holding a secret meeting in the basement of the inn.
The innkeeper is secreting making some kind of magical / fantasy drugs in the basement but some rats (or cockroaches) got in and drank them and have turned into crazed monstrous beings from over-dosing on the drug.
