My understanding of the action is: Hostile creature with a fly speed grapples character on a Broom of Flying, if the grapple is not automatic (like some attacks are) the defending character contests with either acrobatics or strength (their choice). If Flying creature wins, character is snatched off the Broom and carried away to be dropped, and the Broom tumbles to the ground. Just want to confirm before our game tomorrow.
An argument against is the Broom is a worn/carried item like a weapon or clothing, but the character stands on the broom. Even if riding, the Broom is not attached and the character is not a trained rider (even on a horse).
What is the consensus?
I'd say that since the broom is a magic item rather than a mount, grappling won't automatically separate it from the rider, that would require some sort of deliberate action.
Also, I'd point out that in both the 2014 and 2024 rules, a broom's rider can instantly summon it with a command word so long as they're within one mile of it.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Moving a grappled creature on Broom of Flying hovers beneath and can be ridden in the air so to me it should remain on it if it choose so. Otherwise like 6thLyranGuard said it can just summon it back anyway.
Yea, they can summon it back but not as a reaction. Once they fall 80ft and take the damage, they can summon the broom. OK, thx. I will think more on it.
Broom of flying specifically says it can be 'ridden', and is a lower rarity than other items that grant flight, so I wouldn't say it's unreasonable to treat it like a steed, including the ability to be knocked or dragged off, but I would agree that it's not exactly clearly specified.
