So my original idea was going to be laying my old tv down flat on the table and building a removable frame around it - long story short because of the tv it won’t work
So I don’t want to go out and buy a tv - my second thought was a projector mounting it pointing down to the table - I’ve seen this set up before
So was just wondering what everyone uses? Or if you use projectors what a good one?
First time going down this route so just looking for some advice / ideas
Obviously, there are paper maps, dry-erase maps, actual terrain maps, etc, but it sounds like you are specifically talking about a digitally displayed map.
You already mentioned that your old TV won't work, but was that because of the frame you were going to build?
I ask as I have just used an old 17" monitor that I lay flat on the table. It's not big, but because it is Digital, it doesn't have to be as I can 'pan' the map around to where the players are going so the correct area is always displayed. I personally use Arkenforgefor my Digital Maps and love the animated effects, and although I don't use the feature, you can even have dynamic lighting move as you move your Mini on the map.
If your old TV can lay flat without the 'frame', then I'd go that route, so you don't have to buy a new TV (although Black Friday is coming up and you can pick up a new TV pretty cheap... For under $70 you can get a 32" TV as an example)
I have not used a Projector, and have heard mixed results, but I think that is due to the person's preferences.
Cheers!

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
Doing a digital map or projector certainly takes commitment. I personally don't do it, but it intrigues me, and I may go and try it sometime.
To answer your question, I use a wet erase mat and markers, and dice from my horde with the numbers facing up to tell me which monster they are. It's rather rudimentary, but it communicates well enough. I'm considering making little tokens with numbers instead, but haven't gotten around to doing it.
