So I've recently started a new campaign with 2 players. A gnome wizard and a halfling ranger. They are both level 2 and have played before. The guy playing the wizard is an old school one, been playing since AD&D. The halfling ranger player has played with me for about a year. They recently came up from an old dungeon, a temple of Akadi. It had a few things about the wind dukes and the likes in it. They found their first magical treasure and got a nice small sum of coin. And the old school player, he wants to play something classic. And I'm not a classic player, I started a little over a year ago in 3.0. So I was hoping that someone could help me here. I need something classic. Something that is story rich of course, but the halfling ranger player is could young and he can get bored really quickly (It's kinda hard to hit the spot with him but nvm). So the possibility for a battle isn't necessary but it would wouldn't hurt I guess. My players are currently in Daggerford. They may be going for Amn or secomber soon (Soon being in maybe 2-3 sessions.) I have made a character for secomber, so if they wanna go there I have a little something to work with. But for the time being they are in Daggerford and that area. I'm repeating myself here so I'll try to wrap this up.
A few things to note though. No demons nor devils. Tbh, not a lot of plane stuff. It's okay if it's not the biggest part but in our other campaign we are fighting demons ******* left right up and down. Middle and more. And they are only 2 players, at level 2. They can handle some things since there is an old school player to help think creatively but it's kinda hard to have more than 3-4 enemies at once against two people.
Well, probably not so much the feeling of your character dying around every corner, but else this really helps! Thank you! ^^
They aren't ment to be the heros no, but they aren't ment for regular people either. But they aren't going to hire people. They just aren't that sort of group. I was thinking more the good old, evil wizard trying to take over a part of the world. And then weave in a bit of story for the evil wizard. I am afraid of killing of a character, and it isn't DM vs Players but I feel like if I try to make it more challenging, it might end up killing them. But I guess as a DM, killing a PC has to happen at some point. I will definitely think about the outnumbered thing. As they are only two people so many dungeons are gonna be a lot harder because there are usually a lot of enemies.
But I think I'm gonna wait for level 3 before I start to throw crits, double dice, d10's and higher, more than +4 to hit, and the likes at them. I made an encounter in the dungeon where I made a homebrew undead aarakocra. It had a flying speed of 30 and plenty of space to fly as well. It did decent damage and had 3 other skeletons helping it. While the battle lasted a little while, it wasn't even half as dangerous as I thought it would be. But it was an okay battle. But because they are only two, and the wizard has a +1 con so he has 14 hit points at the moment. And the ranger has a +3 con. So he has 26 hit points. So if I wanna do some damage I gotta go for the ranger, but if I down him he can't heal. So my wizard is kinda ****ed there. So killing them isn't going to be very hard sometimes. but remember the young player? I don't think he is going to have a lot of fun about the creative thinking to defeat enemies, he played a half orc barbarian in the last campaign btw. So he is pretty much the run in and hack away type.
Yeah. I have to gear em up and therefore I'm going between either decreasing the price of healing potions from 50 gp to 30 ish. Or to give them an extra amount of gold.
The magic items they have right now are both homebrew. The ranger gets a "Cloak of Shadow Step". It's a drow made cloak that allows the attuned to cast misty step when in no light or the lowest tier of light. (Can't remember if it's dim or low light though.) This recharges after a short or long rest.
The wizard gets a "Crystal of less spell power 1". When attuned to, the attuned creature may choose a first level spell from their classes spell list. The chosen spell is then stored within and cannot be changed until the chosen spell is used. You chose a new spell after a long rest (if the spell first chosen is used.) This requires attunement by a spellcaster. (Can be used as an arcane focus)
That's the ones that should help them a little bit. They have an extra one but it's not worth mentioning. I will try to hold back a little on magic items, as it's not exactly common to find ******* flaming flying raking dancing shielding flametongue weapons in the pockets of a skeleton in a level 1-3 dungeon ^^. I also want it to be rather special finding a magical item.
