Hey guys! My players and I have been doing a campaign for about half a year, and I figured it'd be fun to through a bonus Holiday adventure in. I have most things already worked out, except... I can't figure out what monster race to make the Grinch. My best guess right now is an unusually green bugbear. I'd like my players to be able to converse with him if they so choose, so I don't want him to be a monster incapable of speaking. I'd also like them to be able to fight him, though, and I'd rather just use a preexisting species than come up with something new. Any suggestions?
I think that once your players accept the fact that the local village is celebrating Christmas ( or Yuletideif you want the old-time medieval vibe ), that the local monster's evil plan is to steal all their presents, and does so on a large sled being pulled by a tiny dog, and is wearing a Santa costume ... a talking Bugbear isn't really a stretch. Willing suspension of disbelief kicks in to roll with the tone of the silly, holiday related adventure theme.
However - if you really want to play within the rules-as-written, go with some sort of goblinoid ( Ogre, Bugbear, etc. ) in possession of a magic ring which grants them a few additional points of Intelligence, turns them green, and makes them hate Yuletide. The players might eventually come in possession of the ring ( if they defeat Grynch the Terrible ) so maybe make the ring only work on Ogres or Bugbears. They might still keep it and try and use it on a different Bugbear in the future - but that's more amusing than game breaking.
Have fun with it ( and have a great holiday season, as well )!
