So I gave my players a fine ornate broken longsword. The blade itself is broken and a detect magic revealed it magical. However when the wizard used identify on it, the spell failed. As if something blocked it. They're level 3 (soon to be 4 I hope) so I don't see them knowing just yet. As they don't know, the wizard player was smart enough to not put the sword in use. Which gave me a chance to think about what the sword might do if used. They won't unlock the full thing by sheer battle, they would need to attune to it., and luck me, the wizard didn't trust it so he shoved it in the bag of holding. Phew. Now I need some help in what this sword could do. I was thinking sentient weapon, but a little too early. That depends. At this point, I'm open to (almost) everything. It has the stats of a shortsword, not a longsword. However it was once a longsword. From what I remember I told the wizard that it felt 'very' old. Thanks in advance! ^^
I would suggest planning your magical objets in the future, so you know what you are giving your players. Just having a list noted somewhere of potentiel item you thinl the party could have for their level and configuration is really usefull.
As per creating the item, I used a homebrewed magic hammer in my own campain. I plan to make it to the item gains power as they do, but for now it a +1 hammer with a couple of magic item quirks you can find in the Dungeon Master's Guide. It wispers warnings, giving +2 to initiative (and setuping the fact that it could be sentient), and sense the presence of orcs. It's an uncommon item in power right now, but it is unique. Basically it's pretty much a dormant artefact. If you want to inspire yourself with what I did, go ahead! But these are just suggestions.
This sounds great! Yeah I was gonna plan it but that's why I blocked the divination. It was a both indicator that I might be dangerous, and a way for me to lock it up! ^^ But I like the idea of a sentient weapon who is dormant. And if you attune to it and use it well the one bound inside wakes up ^^.
Cursed is a big word ^^. That depends on the curse. If I want to curse players, I wanna do it because there is another really GOOD effect on the weapon. Like craven edge. You gain strength increase as you hit but you can get your soul sucked out. A cursed item that is just ouright annyoing most of the time. It can be fun for maybe a game maybe two but in the end it just gets in the way. So if you have a curse in mind I would love to hear it, but it doesn't have to be no. ^^
Under legendary I guess. It's power level might shape the time that they can reveal it. So if it's uncommon it may be in 1 or 2 levels. While very rare might be in 5 to 8 levels. ^^
Sharp sword inside a bag of holding. Sounds like a problem that solves itself.
I feel like that's a dick move. And they probably have it wrapped in cloth. If it was a great sword however, then it would be a larger issue. But else, if you can't even carry most magical weapons in your BOH, then it loses a "huge" portion of it's utility, IMO that is. Sometimes I go deeper into things, other times I don't really care ^^. Like with arrows. I have a fighter in a different campaign who uses a bow, but it would just make the game harder for him. If he had played it a little more then I might remind him that he has a limited supply of arrows before he needs to restock.

So is it supposed to be cursed?
"Not all those who wander are lost"
So you need help brewing a magic item?
What rarity do you want it to be? (Rarity often determined by power)
It's a 10-minute video, but, it's something hilarious if you wanted to screw with your party. There is quite a bit of adult language in it.

I'm 18 seconds in and all I can think about is Modwyr right now. xD
