I'm DMing for my family when we play. We consist of myself, my wife, my 13 year old daughter and my 7 year old son. We played through Lost Mines of Phandelver, and everyone loved it, so I went out and picked up Storm King's Thunder. We played through it until the first encounter with Iymrith, and Harshnag's sacrifice. I decided to add some extra flare to it by scripting a few things out for dramatic effect. The end result was my son reduced to tears because he was so sad about Harshnag. I wasn't expecting that, but I have to admit, I felt good that my words brought that kinda emotion out of him for a NPC that they didn't spend a lot of time with.
Anyone else have similar reactions from players with something dramatic like that?
I've killed Droop twice in my campaign, and though no one has literally cried over it, the youngin's at the table all cry "NOOO!!! NOT DROOP!! SAVE HIM PALADIN!" or look for anyway, including using a scroll of revivify, to save the bloody goblin's life! But he is the table's mascot, honestly.
