So here's the story, I'm running a campaign where in the beginning, there was already an undead problem, and then it got worse because what is basically an ancient soul gem battery is shattered and thousands upon thousands of souls are released that essentially turn into undead creatures. So now the area is pretty much swarming with undead. My players are in the mountain searching for a solution to the problem and are travelling quite a lot.
Now, here is what I want to do. Constant encounters with undead is boring, tedious, and takes up our precious game time, so I want to make (or steal) a system to make this better. I figure it would consist of me rolling to see if they encounter anything for every x distance, then rolling to determine what they encounter and how many. Then the players would tell me what resources they are willing to use in a fight, like spell slots, items, or abilities. Maybe I roll to see if anything interesting or cool happens during the fight and then end it with me rolling dice to determine how much damage they take during the fight based on all of the factors.
The real question is, is there already a system that I could use similar to this or would I have to make one up from scratch? I don't want to spend hours, if days, toiling over this if some genius has already made it. If I do have to make one up, do you guys have any cool ideas or tips I could use?
L5R's mass combat system might be similar to what you are looking for. I remember a DM of mine using a variant of it to handle several combats in a short time while keeping the players engaged.
