variant optional dungeon mastering rule on square grid
5' square grid diagonal traverse is +2' (+2' extra for difficult)
Inspiration: math
'extra gritty realism' variant optional dungeon mastering rule on square grid: As above but DM secretly keeps a coffee shack style punch ticket for each character and NPC. 15 circle punches per ticket that the DM secretly punches when they move on a diagonal traverse. When a toon reaches 15 punches 'bam' DM should make a sound like old timey brit police sedan and hand them the ticket with the words " -1 foot on next move; violation: law of squares; PC: Bob the Barbarian." Then start a new ticket.
Pythagorean cultists have only 10 punches on their tickets and they GAIN +1 foot instead. They're widely regarded as notorious cheaters in olympic stadium races.
If you start doing that tedious method. just switch to hex-grids instead. I don't get why there are DM's out there who always look for the most difficult and tedious solution to non-existing problems. we got enough work as it is.
'extra gritty realism' was not intended to be taken seriously. Its +2 feet that's it.
When I read the DMG...*head smack* I thought "yea I could do it that unrealistic and over-complicated way" then again I can just call it the +2 feet that math says it is.
The punch ticket misdirection was for the inevitable rule lawyers that will want to split hairs over that last 7/100 of a foot. 'Rounding up' to 50/100 in the DMG is better?
The DMG's system is inaccurate by -43/100 of a foot and mine is by +7/100. And I'm not really going out on a limb saying mine's simpler as well.

I prefer the 5, 10, 5 method myself. It's more realistic than square circles, and still simple.
