So I’m about to start a local game group with some friends in about a month running lost mines of Phandelver. Mostly new players and a few experienced. This is my first time I will be DMing.
any advice and should I invest in monster manual and there Dm guide or well the lost mine of Phandelver book be enough for this first time experience running it?
The Starter Set has all of the info you need to run that adventure. You won't need the Monster Manual or Dungeon Master's Guide as long as you're sticking to what's in the adventure.
The main thing to keep in mind is that you have to be willing to improvise. Players will inevitably try to do something that's not written in the book. Try to familiarize yourself with the NPC's motivations before each session so it's easier for you to make up something on the fly if you have to.
Basic Rules + Starter Set :] I have only one advice: Be you. Don't try copy others DMs. Read books of your interest and practice that style of narrative. So you can try another type of narrative in the future. Just be you and relax. You will do a great job ;3 Good luck!
Yea, I played enough to know things can and will go off the expected branching paths lol. Just haven’t bought the Phandelver module yet to know if what’s in it is enough. I own phb and Xgte books(physical).
So the module and extra dice should be sufficient then?
It's a great module for learning how to DM. The module had all of the monsters and magical items from the adventure in the appendices and comes with the basic rules which can also be picked up in pdf format from the WotC website.
I'll only add one thing as my group is half way through LMoP. If it seems the group wants to continue after LMoP, maybe try to get an idea of what they want to do before they complete the module. Be it another module or if your comfortable enough move into homebrew. This will help you plant story hooks and make the overall story transition smoothly from LMoP to whatever your group decides.
