i remember in 3.5 the DMG had a table for wealth by level. i can't seem to find for this edition. what would be a good starting gold amount for 15th level characters?
There are tables in the DMG and XGtE which give an idea of how many magical items a group should acquire by level 15, we can use this to get a general idea of starting gold.
It is assumed that, using the standard reward system, the party should receive approximately 60 minor magical items and 15 major magical items, as well as about 316,000 gold. Minor magical items would include common/uncommon magical items and consumables. Major magical items would be rare and greater items, generally gear and reusable items.
We take the earnings from selling those magical items and the earned gold, add them together, and we get about 534,000 gold. Now we split that up based on the party size, we'll go with the classic 4 player party, and we get approximately 133,500 gold to start with at level 15.
**Disclaimer** This is not my math, I'm using information that was compiled by other people, your numbers may vary if you decide to do the math yourself.
Zero gold would be perfectly fine. Characters starting at any level are not characters who have been playing D&D and are not entitled the rewards of having done so.
The starting gold and equipment should reflect and support the story. These could be heroes who have just been summoned/awakened/created/abducted, and have only been armed with some basic equipment and a handful of coins, or they could be an assembled group of famous adventurers who each bring an inventory brimming with legendary artifacts and spare hordes of treasure. Neither one is "correct".
A vague balance between each player is always nice though, so if all start with similar then all should be fine.

thank you for the info. it's very helpful.
Pg. 38 in the DMG has a table at the bottom that gives you a good idea of starting equipment for different level ranges.
Remember this is a game and it's suppose to be fun for everybody. Let's all have fun and kill monsters.
