Hey folks! Myself and one other person both like to DM so every month we switch roles in our party of 4. We are struggling to come up with a way to keep our characters in the story. Should we just have our characters go do their own thing or should we keep them in the party? If we keep them in the party how do we go about doing this because it's a lot of work to DM and run a character at the same time.
You could try using the Unearthed Arcana Sidekick rules (https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/unearthed-arcana/sidekicks) for the DMs character to make running them much simpler and then continue to have them in the party either being run by the DM or another player.
Maybe these two characters are bound by some strange magic curse where only one of them can be on the Material plane at the same time. And every month they swap, sending one into a pocket dimension where they sleep while the other can act in the world.
Also feel free to change what you do every time you switch. Maybe this month it makes sense for that character to be missing for a few sessions, but the next you run them as a NPC/Sidekick.

Play the same character... but he is touched with a split personally!
Jesus Saves!... Everyone else takes damage.
That’s so cool!!!!
Are you using the plot point system (in the DM Guide)?
You can make your character an NPC whilst you are dming so that they are still involved in the story.
Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1!
Never tell me the DC.
