I am starting up an OOTA but I will run it as a solo adventure. My player wants to play a Tiefling Warlock. He asked for help on the details of the patron so I offered to work with on presenting the story to him and doing character discovery/background in a different way. I am asking help with refining the patron idea, not sure if it should be a demon in the story, or an outside influence.
I got inspired to play the adventure having my player's Teifling Warlock have amnesia, the events of the previous day unkown to him, he finds himself waking up with all the prisoners, not knowing how he got there, who or where he was, or the extent of his powers or basic abilities. He has been there several days with a friendlier prisoner being near when he awakens (on the third day) and warns him of his situation, and not being taken advantage of as the prisoners are catching on about his lack of memory. This can set up some cool role playing situations as I can play diffeent NPC against eachother... (he has been waking up every day forgetting what happened the day before). The only way for him to combat this is to start writing down copious notes about the day, but he needs to find a way to write stuff down or remember). I will probably have him start regaining the memories he experiences as he writes them down, being able to remember what he writes on the day after his note action.
I thought to make Jimjar an avatar of Callarduran Smoothands - deep gnome deity of knowledge and mining. He's the patron of the Svirfneblin who are known for gems, illusion magic, and their relationship to earth elementals. He can either be involved as somehow making a bet with the character in the past for powers, or in exchange for a favor, but the catch is that he would need to be unaware of the deal, a reason for the amnesia. Jimjab is there to prod him along and play with him as the player fumbles with his memory. Or Jimjab could have made a bet against the patron of my character and Calladuran (Jimjar) sent an avatar of his to have good fun with the player and foil the plans of his patron... I am having a hard time deciding as I would like for the character to have the powers of the Fiend pact which does not fit in if Calladuran was the patron... I like the idea that Calladuran (Jimjar) made a bet with the patron, or has a stake in helping the player...
What do you think?
I am aware of the challenge of running this as a solo adventure. It will be highly narrative with the player being the only combatant with exception to the tag along motley crew of prisoners. I bought the companion guide from DMs Guild to help with incorporating them in a useful but easy way for the player.
