New DM here and first time posted. Hosted my 4th session last night on the Lost Mines of Phandelver Campaign. My player and I are having a blast, and I"m thoroughly enjoying being challenged.. My party is currently running through the campaign and spent most of the time last session in the Thundertree Ruins. While in the midst of battling some Giant Spiders, our Rogue decided to hightail it to the Dragon Keep in the ruins. Personally, I thought he was going on a suicide mission, or he was going to try and steal the loot but... as this particular player does, he likes to add to the lore we're all building and throw out some curveballs to flush out the narrative.
He successfully made it up the dragon tower undetected, made it over to the treasure chest, and right when I thought he was going to try and steal the treasure out from under the dragons nose, he immediately dumped all his gold into the treasure chest and ran back to join the battle outside. After the battle ended, he told the other members that where he's from, legend tells of blessings toward those who willfully donate gold to dragons.
I'd like to reward this player for doing what he did, but I"m not totally sure what to do and was wondering if any other DM's had any thoughts. I was considering starting the next campaign with the Green Dragon swooping in to give our thief a reward of some sorts, was thinking maybe the dragon decides to give our thief a ring of invisibility in hopes that he'd use it to steal more gold and return it to him... but if anyone has any other ideas that they think would be really fun, I'd love to hear them!
Thanks for reading! I feel myself and my players are all just ankle deep into DnD and are in this for the long haul.
LOL that sounds hilarious. sounds like you are your group are having a great time!
Was the dragon there when the rogue did this? If not, the dragon could consider tracking the rogue by smell etc (feel free to add change things to dragon's other monsters to help with your world building).
Dragons, even young ones like having minions, you could create some side adventures where the dragon would "suggest" places for the party to go and perhaps even give the party some intelligence, and of course then get loot back from it. Of course the green dragon would ultimately betray the party but it could be a race to see who backstabs whom first :) The dragon could be the one that suggests investigating Old Owls Well (sp?) where the red wizard is for example.
A young green dragon could be stingy with giving out items from its "hoard", perhaps things that only have a few uses like potions would work.

I'd say that, since his culture believes in some sort of blessing, actually dole that out. In the DMG there are some limited use Charms that would fit the bill as a good consumable reward. I'd suggest either the Charm of Heroism or the Charm of Vitality.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
I think my players would get a real kick out of being "adopted" as Minions by a Young Green Dragon during their next session. They haven't visited Old Owl Well yet either. I think it would be a great idea to perhaps make Old Owl Well, or maybe even Cragmaw Castle be the next "potential" nesting home for this Dragon so he forces them to the location. I'll report back after our next session on Friday!
