My d&d group recently entered a jungle setting where they literally stepped into a blight infecting the forest. They are on their way to the largest city in this portion of the map, although i wanted to have this city protected from the blight. The group is currently trying to determine the source/cure for the blight as their NPC party member is infected. The blight has three components, a natural aspect, a necrotic aspect and a magical binding agent. It was created by the big bad that has been tormenting them.
Long story short, I was hoping to have this city with a magical barrier of sorts to protect it. Perhaps have it created by the village elder whom sacrificed his/her life to create the barrier. But I am unsure how to make it work. Any tips/suggestions?
I did something similar in my campaign. I did something akin to making the Old King in my city, who happened to be a spellcaster, cast Wall of Force as a 10th/11th level spell. (Yes, they do exist but require tremendous power and possible sacrifices. So in my city's case, a sacrifice of 50 wizards was required to make the spell work and overturn Mystara's laws of magic. The Area covered 15 Miles and went over the walls of the city itself, and managed to work out. You could use this "Epic Magic" Route to complete what you need done. Perhaps this magic was done before the First Spell Plague ever happened? Spit-balling here haha
Could do it in a piece by piece fashion with numerous instances of a particular spell or item that wards against the blight but doesn't cure it. Kind of like building a dam?
For example, pouring holy water over wood might make it incorruptible by the blight so long as it doesn't fully dry out. That would require some upkeep that the citizenry would have to help maintain. Now you have a constant pressure on the people to do their part in the fight.
A mundane method might be a literal dam of dead ground: they dig a trench and fill it with rocks and sand. Since there's no living material for the blight to corrupt, perhaps that stalls its progress until villainous beings interfere.
Or maybe the elder gave his life and conjured a massive wall of fire that destroyed the forest in a ring to form the dead ground dam.
How about a ritual spell cast in spots every so many meters around the perimeter of the city. Then the town guard has to guard the spot where each spell was cast so the magical inscription isn't damaged. To help, the town has constructed small shrines at each of these sites with the magical inscription protected from the weather. There could be a systems of alarms in case a band of orcs or zombies or whatever attacks one of the points. Some leveled Rangers could be employed by the town to provide early warning. These characters could be protected by a magical medallion they wear on a chain around their neck.
Stargate SG-1 had an episode where the ancient technology shield/defense system was broken by another group. They had to first figure out how to get through the cave control center's defenses before getting a chance to repair the device. Along the way they learn the history and figured out the guy that was killed by the first group was actually the guardian, a human component of the shield. Eventually someone volunteered to be the new guardian and reactivated the shield & defenses just in time to thwart a Goa'uld invasion.

Hope that helps!
Great ideas, thanks for the input.

I like this as well, thanks.
