Hey everyone. So I'm a brand new DM starting a campaign in a few days. There's 6 players of varied experience (2 with a lot of experience, 2 with a couple one shot sessions, and 2 brand new. I'm also pretty experienced as a player).
Since we have some low experience both in players and myself as a DM we are starting with LMoP. I figured it would be a good beginning just to get the players used to the game/each other and for me to get used to my role as well. Originally the plan was to transition into SKT immediately after (played a few sessions as a player and I absolutely love it). However, recently I've been reading up on the Acquisitions Incorporated source book (mainly review/summary type material, haven't actually gotten ahold of it just yet) and I would love to include that somehow. I was thinking of using the opening of a new branch as a hook to get the party to Triboar (since that is the town SKT recommends going to after LMoP) then using the company as a sort of central point for them to return to or to go on quests for during down time or even for main story stuff. The idea is an NPC in Phandalin would give them a tip about someone looking for adventurers further down the Triboar trail, and then just after they arrive the giant raid begins. Once they (hopefully) save the city someone takes notice, possibly Omin, and says he is looking to start up a new branch. Omin or whoever it is would stick around the HQ and would be someone they can more or less always come back and talk to.
I was wondering if anyone has tried something similar and what people's thoughts are on using Acquisitions as a sort of focal point/homebase for SKT.
It could work - there's also a starter adventure in AcqInc that runs levels 1-6. You could easily adapt parts of that. But incorporating elements of AcqInc for flavor is possible in pretty much any campaign. You just have to make sure you're all on board with having some weird "The Office" kind of shenanigans going on. (OK, roll sleight-of-hand to encase Murgoth's bag of holding in gelatin.)
From the way they present Omin in the sourcebook, the new branch might not deal directly with him much, although they could easily use a company sending stone to talk to one of his army of secretarians, or get notes via a documancy satchel. :) But they could absolutely have a branch majordomo with good connections to HQ in Waterdeep.
