Hey, I'm looking for advice on making getting to the next area a challenge rather then the players just saying "we travel to the castle/town/whatever." I'm not looking for it to be a multiple session thing but like maybe a 2 hour challenge, finding clues, etc. To get there. What do you guys normally do and what would you recommend?
Maybe a hidden entrance to a town in the mountains/behind a waterfall/ hidden in the forest. They might have to collect ingredients as an offering to get the door open or follow hints to find the entrance all together.
Maybe the city isn't letting anyone inside because they learned a tribe of bandits is planning to infiltrate, giving the party the choice to either defeat the bandits (and prove it) first, or to find an illegal way to sneak in through the city's defenses.
Maybe it's an elf or forest gnome village in the treetops only: from a distance the players can hear the city noises and see smoke, but when they get near, everything is silent and they can't see a thing...unless they climb a tree. (A Silence spell is cast under the city, for security and to preserve the peace of the forest.)
Maybe the city is hidden under the waters of a lake.
Maybe the inhabitants of the city are were-rats, and surround their entire city with a complicated maze to discourage attackers...the were-rats have no trouble remembering the best paths, but invaders blunder around and are easy prey for attacks from hidden bunkers that are connected to an underground tunnel network.
Maybe a xenophobic city has illusions cast around it to send strangers down the wrong paths, making them think the city is somewhere completely different than where it is.
Maybe the city is high on a mountain in a hidden Shangri-la, and only the bravest explorers dare to climb the mountain and search for its hidden entrance.
