I'm running a homebrew, and I'm going to give a Necromancer a familiar. I was thinking something like a Young Kruthik, Chwinga, or Zorbo, but I can't decide. It has to be Tiny or Small and not a humanoid. Any thoughts?
Because Familiars aren't allowed to attack, CR really isn't that big of a deal. Here's what you should keep an eye out for:
Familiars with high strength are going to get used a lot more than normal to open doors, retrieve objects, etc. Even the higher CR familiars don't have more than 6 strength, so a Zorbo would really be able to do a lot that other traditional familiars can't. Double trouble for strong critters with thumbs
The base familiars all only have animal levels of intelligence, although the expanded familiars a Warlock gets can be quite smart. Tressym are unreasonably smart too.... so it's not out of the question that something as smart as a Chwinga could be a familiar, but be careful about Familiars that are intelligent enough to have their own force of personality and be another party member, that's just like letting a player have two characters.
Creatures with powerful non-attack abilities really will be unbalanced as a Familiar, and that probably rules a Chwinga right out. Those spells, that magical gift, noooope.
Yeah, allowing the normal Familiar options but giving it creature type Undead instead of creature time Fey, Celestial, or Fiend would be the simplest. That's already more than just a cosmetic bump, certain spells and effects don't work on Undead, but doesn't risk a crazy overpowered creature.

I'll keep watch. Happy now?
Most of the Find Familiar candidates are CR 0 (CR 1/8 for the Poisonous Snake). But the expanded Familiar options like Gazer (CR 1/2), Pseudodragon or sprite (CR 1/4), and imp or quasit even go as high as CR 1.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
A Crawling Claw, while maybe not the most optimal, is pretty thematic.
Edit: Or any zombie/skeleton of a normal familiar.
^^^
Couldn't you just do like a raven or a rat and apply the Undead template to it? (skeleton raven, zombie rat, ghost falcon, etc, etc)

edit: NVM
I like the crawlin claw thing, it seems like the best choice non homebrew wise, also, does anyone know how to delete posts?
