Hey, so my players are currently in this setting where they've been transported to a demiplane that is removed from the reach of the gods, but they share it with an Aboleth.
They don't know this yet, but over the course of this campaign the aboleth will, in the absence of the gods, start rebuilding fragments of an old Aboleth empire. This Demiplane is not so large, so they will undouptedly run into it at some point.
My question is this: the Monster manual states the Chuul as an underling of the Aboleth, and there might be some aquatic creatures that logicly would fall under the aboleth's sway, but I'm really lacking some great horrifying monsters to implement here. I'm looking for some real lovecraftian stuff, but I find it hard to get a good idea of what such a creature would look like (basically such a creature would be the result of ruthless torture and experimentation by the aboleth).
does anyone have some good concept for such a creature? or maybe a source where such a creature can be found?
I always thought mind players and aboleths are cousins in evil. I never had a chance to unite them, but they could be amazing together. The only question is who dominates.
If they decide to help each other, with aboleths giving the mind players the astral plane and the mind flayers giving the aboleths the prime, a truly frightening possibility arises, especially if they decided to betray the other onmy after their plans are successful.
If the characters fail, then two mighty and terrifying empires will rise!
Aboleths always make me think Matrix movie series. Anyway, like Mike said, Ithlids come to mind as well as Wastriliths, Morkouth, Chuul like you said...maybe Sahuagin society, Marids.
Kuo-Toa would probably make up the brunt of an aboleth's military force, at least at lower levels. I think Fomorians might also fit well conceptually, due to their cursed/warped aesthetic. Lesser beholder-kin, such as spectators, also work. Sea hags also definitely fit the bill, as well as any low-CR aberration, such as a slaad, otyugh, or berbalang.
