My table just recently accomplished a huge goal in the campaign by overthrowing an evil king, liberating a nation, finding the true heir, and making themselves known as the saviors of the region.
The Heir to the thrown is an NPC friend of theirs and is gonna offer throwing a HUGE party across the whole capital city. What stuff should there be to do??
Well, the first thing that comes to mind for me is assassins. Either someone tries to kill the heir or the party, and a big festival is the time to do it. Maybe after they’ve had a few drinks to slow them down a bit. (If you are continuing with this party, it can be a good way to transition to a new campaign as a new enemy reveals themselves. If not, it’s the last few minions of the BBEG they just defeated.)
There could also be standard festival games: joust, archery, a melee, wrestling, a storytelling contest. Those should all be covered by standard rules.
You could have other things like a drinking contest, if that’s the kind of thing your group goes for, or other skill checks, like climbing a greased pole, or holding your breath.
Maybe the next kingdom over has sent its most eligible prince(ss) over to try and court the heir, and the party has the check them out and make sure they are legit.
Yes, lots of skill check games. If they are drinking heavy, make sure to factor in drunkenness to appropriate checks. There could also be such low level encounters it almost feels like just a trip down memory lane to when they were level 1. Maybe encountering random pickpockets in the crowds. A bar fight. A swarm of rats while trying to get more wine from the basement. Stuff that is almost just an easter egg now from when those things were a challenge.
There can be archery contests. They could judge a craft beer contest. I don’t see any skills involved in that, other than CON saves against bad ale. Or deception checks to not hurt the brewer’s feelings. But the RP could be fun.
They could have magic carpet ride arial tours going on.(Watch out for bird strikes!)
If they have skills with Artisans Tools, maybe come up with a way to let them use those skills to fix or prepare something for the celebration.
For an actual encounter, maybe a charlatan has set up among the legit vendors and is selling “snake oil” potions (colored water) for things like love potions, confidence boosters, vitality potions, CON boosters. People believe they got the real deal, so are acting more confident and such, but some people are onto this guy, and it could fall to the party to confront him.
Set up a joust. Find some gross foods that were eaten back in the day. Drinking competitions always seem to happen. I like a the assassinstion attempt suggestion.
There should be a costume party, so no one has weapons with them, and the assassination attempt should involve a ton of explosives going off at midnight during a fireworks display.
