My party angered a human Emperor and now the emperor has sent a killer/s against the party. My question is what sort of NPC/s should be sent against a party of a Barbarian, druid, Fighter (Eldritch Knight), Sorcerer and a warlock?
I want it to be a deadly encounter but not sure what sort of NPC or multiple NPCs should be sent to deal with them. In my setting, Humans are Xenophobic (Story reasons) and most likely won't work with anything that is not a human or... something created by them.
If more details are needed; Humans are very good at magic (if not the best) and it's uses but not advanced in a sense of having machines, yet.

Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"
Maybe one or two of the enemies will have some kind of charm/dominate effects to use on the barbarian and fighter, then make the party fight itself. Or banish someone, that’s a fun way to take them out of the fight for a while. It seems like the Druid is going to be the healer, so start the fight with a sneak attack and focus fire to bring him/her down.

It depends on how well the Emperor knows about them or what kind of reputation they have.
If they are unknown to him, it´s more likely he will order a search command in his empire and normal soldiers should deal with it at first.
Sounds like maybe you should look into Slaad... Will take the wind out the their sails on the magic front.
