I'm a new dm with new players (I have played since way back) and I picked Dragon Heist to be our first adventure. We are half way through and since my group is CR fans and I don't know a ton about forgotten realms I bought the new book.
As a new dm I would like to string together preexisting adventures to save on encounter design, but I'm not sure how to integrate those into Wildemount. Specifically I need to find a fit for waterdeep in the setting and could use some advice.
Don't be afraid to just transplant locations wholesale into your world. I currently run a homebrew setting that has a Waterdeep in it, Barovia could easily be an Orzhov-controlled neighborhood in Ravnica, and Saltmarsh could go anywhere with an ocean.
Waterdeep could simply be dropped in as a ninth Menagerie Coast city-state without a great deal of fuss. If this was a ground-up restart I'd recommend setting Dragon Heist in Port Damali rather than Waterdeep directly, but since you're already running the game, yeah. I'd just plop Waterdeep down in the Menagerie Coast, either add it as a ninth city or have it replace one of the ones that're already there. The way that city works is a pretty spot-on natural fit for the splendiferous mercantilism of the Menagerie Coast, and each Concord city is under its own governance anyways. Waterdeep could simply be weird compared to the rest of the Concord without any issue.
That's the direction I was going Yurei, thanks. We are about to start chapter 3, so I didn't want to restart, but you're right Port Damali would have been good. I'm going to flavor the Blackstaff as former Cerberus Assembly possible and I replaced the Lord's Alliance faction missions with Clovis Concord missions. I'm not current with CR, and my players are so I am walking a fine line with some of those cites because I don't know which ones have been used on the show. I'm going to shrink Waterdeep down as well since the other large cites are around 100K people and Waterdeep is supposed to be 2 million.
At least that's the idea for now. Still interested in opinions though. I was going to offer Mad Mage, Storm Kings Thunder, and Saltmarsh as options after Dragon Heist.
Great Idea separating Mad Mage from Waterdeep. It's simple, but I missed that idea completely. Although getting a party of non-drow into a mega-dungeon there might be an issue. Thanks.
I haven't read Icehaven yet, but I trust it's a good fit?
