I talked some friends of mine into DnD 5e a year ago and we started as a group of four players and me as a DM. In the meantime my group went up to six players (five level 5 PCs and one level 4 PC) plus me. Our story got to a point, where the players had to leave the realm of the woodelves, in order to get information regarding some problems there and were sent to the swamp south of the forest, where the old witch (a hag) Hurin got banished to. She was threatening the life in the forest and was fighting for control, but got stopped years ago by the fey Aura and her friends Pad (a bear.... ;)) and Alfred (a magic wielding bunny). As of right now Aura, Pad and Alfred guided the group through the dangers of the swamp near to the hags lair. My idea of what happened in the swamp is, that the hag Hurin had taken control over the swamp, after she got banished from the woods. But not long ago a young black dragon settled in the swamp, to hatch her dragon egg. To protect herself, the dragon gathered a little army of kobolds around her. With the help of the kobolds, the dragon fought Hurin for control over the swamp and won, killing most of Hurins minions.
If the players don't just go in and kill Hurin, but try to get the information from her, that they're looking for, she will offer a deal like: "You'll help me, I'll help you". For revenge (and control over the dragon, but pssst...), Hurin wants the PCs to sneak into the dragons lair and steal the dragon egg. In order to be able to do so, Hurin will distract the dragon and lure her out, while the players try to sneak in.
Do you have any ideas how this distraction might look like? i was thinking about something like: Hurin will show as a silver dragon to challenge the black dragon or maybe fake an attack. Do you have any better ideas? I will be grateful for creative input :)
