 Wait no, I typed that in a confusing way

there are 5 groves total

each one sits in one of the five points

That's my bad.  The "D" rune and the "M" rune look similar.

To help solve let’s label the grooves starting at the top and going clockwise

1 sea candle

2 lit candle

3 mist candle

4 bad smell candle

5 unlit candle

Hmmm.... 1 - Water.  2 - light. 3 - Air. 4. Heat? 5. Dark

I will be honest this is the part of the puzzle I think needs an extra clue in as there are 30k+ solutions at this stage

so for simplicities sake let’s say there was a clue that led you to the idea that each point of the candle directly acts with 2 other points (1,3,4 - 2,4,5 - 3,5,1 - 4,1,2 - 5,2,3)

and maybe the clue also demonstrated that 1+ 3 + 4 = candle 1

I put my fingers in the Grove and see if the floor moves

When you say the smoke candle is "acrid and sulfurous" does it just smell like ordinary wood smoke?

Also, let's back up.  Which triangles came off of which walls?

What about opposites? Dark on the lit one

 This has got buried in the middle so quoting to bump

So maybe 

Fire water air = mist candle

You make an insight check - natural 20 again!

you feel that you need to place all five in to get a reaction from the puzzle. You place 

1 Water, 2 light, 3 time, 4 air, 5 fear

the candle in 1 position flickers alive with a green light 

in the pentagon in the centre beneath the water tile runes appear, you use your cipher and translate the word “Tide”

I remove the tiles and see if the words/green flame stays

The disappear and the candle returns to giving off the fragrance

As a guess, we need the word in the pentagon to by the Candle Maker's word of warning.

But I look at my real-life character sheet and haven't rolled enough on Int :D
