Actually, I would say that Acting at a local theatre helped my DMing more than most of the functions I have done as a DM helping anything else. My regular IT work has taught me how to shift gears on problems quickly enough and plan out how things are going to work out to prevent complications. My early work on helpdesks taught me to listen to people when I couldn't visually deal with the problem. Also, my college years as a waiter taught me to listen and get things right as well. I'm not saying that being a DM couldn't help out the other way around, but in my case, being a DM was more strongly influenced by other sources. As for creating things and the story aspect, being a voracious reader from second grade onwards made a huge difference... but acting tied a lot of it together...

I can empathize with this 100% - being an analyst and developer really helps to untangle the system, figure out what's supposed to be going on, and building effective scenarios for that system.

Honestly, the biggest thing was that I was able to make a lot of friends quickly in high school and now college because of our shared interest. I met a lot of my closest friends through D&D and Magic: the Gathering.

Share your stories! For me, it’s helped me with quick math, confidence, thinking quickly on my feet, and just general life skills
Hmm ... social interaction? Design skills? Creative writing skills? Improvisational skills? Ability to eat pizza?
