Playing the 2nd part of lost mine of Phandelver. My group did the red brand encounter and due to really lucky high rolls, they took care of the bandits quickly with minimal damage, and were very cocksure of themselves. They went to explore the surface manor ruins. Since there wasn’t anything in the book about the surface, I placed a small mimic there, as a very conspicuous piece of treasure, out in the open. Seemed to make logical sense, since ruins outside of a village would be great hunting grounds for a monstrosity. They didn’t bother to investigate, show any concern or “common sense” about odd treasure in the middle of nowhere. One PC quickly jumped upon it and battle commenced.
the group had a blast, and have been talking about it since. The role play was hilarious. The grappled pc with the mimic attached was running in circles screaming “get it off! Get it off! Get it off!”
After the battle, they grabbed a long stick off the ground to use as a poker for future treasure. This DM is happy.
I have ALWAYS had good experiences with mimics! I think my favorite one was I placed a Billiards table and very accurately and specifically described the arrangement of balls and cues in order to convince them it had to be a puzzle. The flirty bard was all like "hey, lemme show yall how its done..." and leaned on the table to shoot only to have the table open a mouth and grab her. The comedic timing was priceless lol
I actually had my party run into a Mimic in Session Zero for Phandelver just so everyone could practice their characters. I was playing them through the scene of being hired by Gundren, and revealed that there was a mimic hiding in his storage room waiting for someone to eat. The fight went well, especially since they were all level 1 playing their classes for the first time ever. In the end they ended up naming the two oxen "Mimic" and "Ox Number 2".
