Hey guys. I'm Cait and this is my first time as a DM. I'm running a the Dragon of Icespire Peak for 4 players and I've read the DM guide that came with the book but one thing is confusing me... I can't figure out how to determine the dragon's location?! I know I'm supposed to roll the D20 every time they leave or arrive at a location but how does my D20 roll locate the dragon? All I can think is that either :
A - If I roll over say 14 the players see the dragon from afar either flying or feasting and if I roll 20 then they can encounter it B - If I roll a 12 I can move the dragon 12 hex (5 miles) from it's lair on the peak C - I give each location a number and whatever number I roll it means the dragon is in that area
I hope that makes sense.. I've done so much research but no one has been specific about how the roll determines where the dragon is location wise! If anyone can answer this I would be so grateful! Thanks in advance :)
On the bottom right of page 11 of the "Dragon of Icespire Peak" Adventure book there is a chart numbered from 1 to 20 and the associated location.
If you are using D&D Beyond the chart is at the end of the section: "Where's the White Dragon" in the Chapter "Running the Adventure".
Alternately, Cyrovain can be wherever you want it to be. When I ran this module the dragon happened to be wherever the PC's were heading next. Never close enough to engage, but either off in the distance, or signs it had been there. (My intent was to keep the pressure on, while not forcing an premature engagement.)
Thank you for responding! Ah yes that makes sense, I’ll double check that part of the guide book although I think I’ll do what you did as that sounds like the most exciting for the players. Thank you so much for the advice, much appreciated! :)

Hope that helps. If not I can attempt to clarify.
