I have recently pulled my kids into D&D (2 boys, 11yo and 13yo) - Forgotten Realms specifically. We have done some homemade intro, then we went through Phandelver (I did have to adjust a bit there, as they started at lv3 but being just the two of them I had to play around with enemy numbers or lvls). After Phandelver we have been running some homemade stuff and now my boys are both lv8 (Hunter Ranger and Berserker Barbarian).
I'd like to run something premade for them (we enjoyed Phandelver a lot) but as I look at all the official modules, they are targeted at parties of 4-5 and usually starting at lv1. If I am not wrong then this means I would need to basically rework all the NPC levels pretty significantly to give them an appropriate level of challenge (ie. not to bore them to death by killing dozens of CR1/2 cultists but also not to toast them in one encounter).
So, I would be grateful for some help here - is there anything you would recommend in our situation? Something that is either geared better towards small parties or something that is easy to scale up/down. If possible, I would prefer to avoid running extra "quasi-party" NPCs just to beef the party up.
Thanks :)
