I’m about to start running Tomb of Annihilation and I’m thinking of ways to ‘open out’ the beginning of the adventure.
I plan to not have the Death Curse (ie, the adventure’s main quest) revealed from the very start. I am planning to have the PCs meet in Port Nyanzaru, have a few adventures in the city and the wilds outside, and THEN have them learn of the Death Curse, meet Syndra Silvane, and get sent on the main quest.
I feel this would give the adventure a more organic beginning and give the players time to establish their characters and their place in the world. From my reading of the book so far, I think this will work.
If you’ve run ToA or have a better understanding of it - does my idea seem sound? I don’t want to do this if I’m missing something obvious that’s going to cause me problems.
Yeah, that plan can work. I have two players in my game who had characters that died last season and were brought back. I have elected to not have the Death Curse affect them right out of the gate and instead begin around the middle of the adventure after they have spent a few weeks in the jungle.

Then why are they there?
In my game the party got hired by Syndra as normal. In his game the group could just be exploring Chult for any number of reasons.
In the first session of a campaign, why are the adventurers anywhere? They've got to start somewhere, right?
