I co-DM a campaign with someone. Our campaign started with Lost Mines of Phandelver, and is now in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. We'll probably move to Mad Mage or something after that. But one thing we've been doing -- and I think it works really well -- is carving out a few sessions at a time to let a specific PC explore their backstory through a side-quest. The side-quests tend to focus in on some element of their background -- their family, or relationship to their homeland or class, etc. -- and take us into another part of Faerun. It works well.
But, my co-DM (who's a PC, when I'm DMing) has expressed that he'd like his character -- a conniving Fey Elf Bard -- to try to become a lich (technically, a baelnorn). I think it's a cool idea, particularly for more advanced levels, but I'm trying to figure out how to pull it off. I'm not committed to him actually becoming a lich. In fact, I'm sort of like the idea of him trying and failing. Any recommendations on adventure modules that would facilitate exploring that?
I'll note that -- for another PC's backstory quest -- we're already planning to run Dead in Thay, which features some liches and potentially their phylacteries. That'd provide some exposure to liches, of course, but isn't quite the lich-making focus I'm looking for. Another thing that may provide color: His PC's a Zhent agent, and he has expressed interest in forming his own splinter group and taking the Zhentarim over. In a perfect world, I'd find a module that I could adapt easily to allow for his outlandish ambition around both the lich-creation and Zhentarim.
Thanks for any advice you can offer! I realize this is a pretty specific question... :)
I don't know any modules, just a side not from me since it's clear that you are playing in FR.
Baelrnorn is an elven lich who chose to become one for one specific purpose - duty to elven realm, either as a keeper of knowledge or a teacher or a guardian of a sacred elven place. It's not something one becomes on a whim because one seeks power. Becoming a baelnorn in elven society is usually seen as a sacrifice, not a boon.
To my knowledge an elf can become a regular lich as well. So I think there are baelnorn liches and regular liches who used to be elven - the latter did so because well, they wanted power, immortality etc.
You are of course welcome to change anything you like, but I'd keep that in mind when discussing plans, ambitions and motivations :)
