The hobby has its challenges in general, and you don't have to be magically good to play or run the game. If your trying, and enjoying yourself, and respect your companions, your doing fine. Some ppl are really dedicated to the hobby, and some just enjoy it for a while.
Maybe there are other avenues of finding players, you might be able to find more steadfast players in a local RP community. Board game groups tend to have a lot of RPers, and you may consider finding someone else who DMs and join their game, play for a bit, maybe they'd like to switch off the next campaign and you can DM.
You may also consider playing other settings too, it might be that your particular setting isn't engaging for enough players in your reach. It's tough deciding what you really want vs what will work.
My sister's group meets once a month. Mine meets twice a month. Life just gets in the way, especially as you get older and kids/professional obligations/other priorities start appearing.

Trust me, you're being paranoid. Players will generally dissociate from the group or just tell you if you're a crappy DM.
