Can I have your opinions on these basic ideas I had for a campaign? I was thinking of creating and running a campaign set entirely within a high school and its grounds, where all the characters are high school students.
NPCs would be other students, teachers and staff, and the monsters, creatures and beasts that roam the grounds.
The school itself would be very wealthy and elite, and would own the entire mountain; upon which the school was built, as well as extensive caverns and catacombs beneath the school. All the students in attendance would be highly talented in their respective fields and the teachers and staff would themselves be masters of magic and war. The purpose of the school would be train the best of the best of best. Military and government leaders, commanders, explorers, monster hunters, healers, scouts and adventurers. All the skills and abilities needed to survive and thrive in a world full of things that want to kill and eat you.
To gain admittance into the school, you would have already had to pass through elementary and middle school and come out with the best grades and references. So, it is assumed that just by getting into the school, you must be somehow special.
The school is segmented into dorms; which represent the factions within D&D, however, classes and exercises and extra curricular activities are taken together, so the students of each dorm, must work with all the others to succeed, while still attempting to earn trophies and prizes, so that their dorm comes out on top at the end of the school year, and qualifies for special rewards and training. As well as more financial support for their dorm, and trips into the outside world, for the chance to hone their skills in a real setting.
Extra curricular activities within in the school are organised by guilds (student clubs) that are ran and maintained by individually respective teachers and members of staff, who act as the face and masters and recruiters of their respective guilds. All the traditional guilds exist within the school that would exist within a standard setting; and in this way, the students do all the work for the maintenance and upkeep and discipline of the school.
It’s not unusual for students who get on well together, to form parties that work together for their mutual benefit. Often; through their shared struggles and experiences, forming friendships that last a lifetime. In fact, the people who send their children to the school, rely on their children forming these bonds with each other, to ensure the survival and future relations of their clans.
The entire campaign would take place within the school and its grounds, with trips into the outside world, and the entire party would be made up of students. So each player would have to create a character that was between 13 and 18 years old.
Obviously; as the players, their characters would be amongst some of the most skilled and competent students, although I would create a few NPC parties, to act as counter balances, in an attempt to maintain the competitive school theme.
As fellow DMs; world builders, and even players, can I have you thoughts on my ideas please?
Feels like Highschool at Hogwarts. I like it. Slight reflavour and you are all set for your Harry Potter meets D&D theme school. Throw in a little ANIMAL HOUSE for spice. Your players will have a great time. Sort them into houses (Manticore, Bulette, Couatl and Phoenix). Wizard dual pvp class, alchemy class, underground warlock club, detention in the dungeon, double secret probation, barbarian etiquette class, Adventure decathlon.
“What? We have to fight a troll in the gym locker room the same night I need to ask “dreamy-npc-person” to Wizard prom!!!”
”Forget prom, do you see that nerdy sorceress over there with the pink hair? I heard she uses WILD MAGIC .... and hair extensions!!!”
“Wizard Prom... they are lame. Druid Prom is where it’s at. They party like animals.”

You watched Fantasy High on Dimension 20? It is set in a 80s style high school (and is awesome)
