Mine is for Dms rewards adventures league, got better from season 4 onward since we can get magic items via DMs quests. To test out a monster to see if it beatable or how hard it is so I'll know when I'm a player. And to get other players good magic items for AL, so that when I'll play with them as a player against another DM who runs other modules, we will have better characters. Like if someone is playing a rogue, I'll find the adventure that has the ring of evasion and DM it, Dm another adventure for the ranger to get the Oathbow, etc.
PS:DMs quest rewards doesn't say you have to DM tomb of annihilation or modules using adventures league rules or format, but it does say you have to DM at least 2 hours wort of adventures league to qualify for the quests. You can DM a 2 hour module using AL rules and format and then DM other modules and Hardcovers non AL format and still qualify for the quests, according to RAW. Though I prefer to DM most stuff using AL format.
I started because I am the most reliable person I know. No, I'm not being facetious, years and years of canceled games and people not showing up. Eventually, I was the most dedicated person so I learned to run, and I learned that its as much fun sending monsters after the players as it is facing down said monsters.
On a side note, I think if you are trying to find a way to twist the rules of a completely voluntary and "on your honor" based system you may be missing the point. Just make up some names and list yourself as having run the game in your Log.

I DM since I had to, once I set up my first group, I couldn't find a DM so, It was decided I was the best candidate for DM, that's about it, but I still enjoy it
Me and my brother's have worked on a fantasy world for years, and I was the one that really took off with it as far as lore, gods, and land was concerned. I'd love to be a writer, so me creating the world enough for my friends and family to play in it helps with ideas and keeps us connected to something we all loved as kids. I may not ever publish a novel, but I may try to put together a campaign setting to sell via the DMG in the next few years.
Other than my players having personal investment in the stories, I enjoy the planning and running the game for it's own sake. I'm a people pleaser and nothing feels better than my table telling me how much they enjoy a certain character or how amazed they were that I actually threw in a twist they didn't see coming that. I love hosting my players and watching them as guests in my head space for a few hours.
I enjoy the creative aspects of developing and running a multi-year long campaign. Would like to play more, but find the DM experience more rewarding. Can be tough to find a group in my area, so DMing also has the advantage of attracting players.
I generally get my playing fix online with FantasyGrounds.
And it is a good thing I ended up enjoying it from the get-go because otherwise I'd likely have never stuck with table-top gaming, as I was the only person willing to DM I knew for a couple of years when first picking up the hobby by myself with no prior exposure to anything more directly table-top related than classic board games and a few RPGs I played on my Nintendo.
I enjoy it so much, in fact, that every other hobby or skill I've picked up or had prior to finding table-top games has managed to morph into another DMing aid of some sort. Even my training in carpentry rarely gets brought up for a reason other than planning a gaming table I might eventually be able to afford or repairing and reinforcing a bookshelf overladen with gaming books.
Firstly, honestly, it was a great way to get more D&D in my life - I live in Nerdland, so it's easy to find players, but it's pretty hard to find a DM.
What I enjoy most about it though is the challenge. I have a plan, and my players muck it up, and I get to use a lot of off-the-cuff strategizing and storytelling. I try never to handwave too much, and really challenge myself to make the story fit. I love dreaming up conflicts, maps, voices, and puzzles for my players to solve in ways wildly unlike I imagined.
I have been playing roleplay-focused games and D&D inspired games and straight D&D for half my life now, but I never took the dive to DM. It's a lot to organize, and when it comes to major combat situtations, I'm a well below average DM. But I just finished listening to The Adventure Zone, and Griffin really inspired me to give it a go. I'm not ready to DM vets, but my noobs can't get enough and they have no idea I don't really know what I'm doing.
2) My passion for the game is high enough to spend extra hours in prep every week so we can play consistently for the past 27 years. Through all of life's cool changes, my passion and commitment to the game just did not die down (as it did for other great people I knew and know).
3) My friends tolerated me as DM :) and did not walk away from the table :).

I agree with so many of the comments already made: I was the only one willing to DM for my group, I love the creative aspect of world-building, and I'm a huge people pleaser. As Matthew Colville so brilliantly said in his "Running The Game" YouTube series, "When you have fun, I have fun."
I apologize, I was just making a silly joke. I didn't intend for it to come off that way.
(... there's the people-pleaser in me coming out again.)
I think your joke wasn't unreasonable. As a woman it's hard to convince ladies to join the hobby.
You're absolutely right, and it's incredibly unfortunate... (I've since edited the original post to not include the joke.)
I count myself blessed that I'm able to share the table with my friends and family, many of which are women. But I realize for many others, it's hard to convince people that D&D is anything more than a "nerdy white-guy game." In a lot of ways, DM's are an entry way to this hobby and it really does fall on us to foster a community that is not only welcoming to everyone, but also fun for everyone.
It's another one of the reasons why I love DM'ing. Part of the challenge is creating something that has a low barrier to entry, is welcoming to players of any belief or background, and is also entertaining. It means being flexible and changing your adventure on the fly to cater to your audience. It requires empathy and being sensitive to how it affects your players emotionally. And sometimes... it requires stopping the game and talking with your players.
No video game, book, or movie is going to give you an experience like that with your players/audience.
I love telling stories, I love being a spectator on the sidelines while everyone else gets what i throw at them, I`ve really no failure only wish them success. And because no one else will.
I much prefer to play, but DM to serve a role I admit I have become more narrow minded in how I want to spend my time playing. My time is much more limited, and I am more careful on how I spend it. I have no time for what I call "stupid DnD" -- ways of play that don't build community, teach rules wrong, etc.
That said, by DM'ing, I am telling stories I want to tell, but also being open in how I am doing it. I am constantly searching for ways to improve my DM'ing and being open on letting others steak and improve on what I find to improve their DM'ing AND my enjoyment at their tables.
My main goal today as a DM is to introduce my son into the joy of the game and help him be a better DM than I am. It also extends to friends and family. Build the game, spread the fun.
