Is there a list or way to search for command word or phrase magical items only? I'm looking for a warlock the great old one item like that. I think Oathbow is great for rangers, Staff of the Woodlands is good for Druids, and Orb of Dragonkind fits a sorcerer draconic ancestor. What world work in the same power range while fitting the theme for this warlock?
Um. That's a very rare, a rare, and an artifact. There is no common power range there. I would say a Sphere of Annihilation fits a great old one warlock, but it would probably kill him so not very useful.
not the answer you're looking for and not RAW, but just throwing it out there - lore says that many magic items created way back in the day (created before the fall of Netheril) had command words - especially wands...so you could set it off without being present.
Looking at rarity only, I think everyone would agree; but power isn't always associated with rarity.
Orb of Dragonkind: DC 15 CHA to use it or then a DC 18 WIS fail to be under suggestion, can cast spells, potentially summon angry evil dragons not under your control.
Oathbow: Advantage on sworn enemy attack rolls, no disadvantage on long range against sworn enemy, sworn enemy gets cover advantage on in full cover, sworn enemy takes extra 3d6, and disadvantage with attack rolls on all other weapons while sworn enemy lives.
Staff of the Woodlands: +2 attack rolls with staff, +2 damage rolls with staff, +2 spell attack rolls, can cast a bunch of spells, and turn into tree.
Arguably, the oathbow may be the weakest since it is an once a day one target killer that can screw you for a week if the target escapes and does nothing else to other targets.
Orb of Dragonkind seems like the next in line since it is mainly a list of spells add-ons with a risky attunement and risky dragon summoning.
Staff of the Woodlands seems the best with three different +2 bonuses, tree summoning full cover, and extra spells. Only downfall being that it could become nonmagical if the user goes trigger happy on the spells.
DM can make a Orb of Dragon kind op, but the item mentions angry evil dragons that probably aren't friendly on being summoned and another angry dragon from within trying to control you.
