For the boss battle, the party is fighting 2 assassins, some stuff to keep them in melee while the assassins happily Sneak Attack, and some invisible stalkers. Is there any way to plot this encounter to optimize the damage.threat?
Are you talking about comparing enemy level to party level? If you have a CR for each creature, you can put it into the encounter builder here or Kobold Fight Club.
Keep in mind that these builders both assume the standard 6 encounters per day, so what they call "hard" will be a cake walk if it is the party's only encounter, and impossible if it's their 20th of the day.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
